Temperament
“…intelligent, active dog with an even disposition … he may be somewhat reserved in initial meetings...”
Australian Shepherd Breed Standard
The Australian Shepherd first appeared in registry stud books dating back to the 1950s before ultimately making way into American Kennel Club in 1991 where significant development and expansion occurred.
The Aussie was bred to work side by side, closely with its handler for hours on end, accomplishing tasks together such as herding livestock.
Silver Linings maintains breed integrity and these characteristics.
Please research the breed to determine if it is the right fit for you.

Do you health and genetic test?
Absolutely!
We work closely with a team of experienced veterinarians to extensively examine our breeding dogs with bloodwork, urinalysis, ultrasound, hormone testing, and semen evaluation. Plus, OFA radiographs and CERF exams.
We also maintain an internal database tracking the lifetime health and development of SLAS dogs.
How often do you breed?
Historically, once every few years. In between we raise, train, and compete with our dogs.
Do I choose my dog?
Yes and no.
We take your application and lifestyle seriously, so we work together to carefully select the best matched dog.
How are SLAS dogs raised?
We live, breathe, and maintain our lifestyles centered around the dogs. Each year, we work hard to achieve goals we have set forth. Our litters are reared with a combination of Avidog/Puppy Culture protocols, crate trained, started on leash work, basic commands, handled daily, groomed regularly, socialized, and provided well thought out enrichment activities. They are raised in our home, spending quality time with us as part of all daily activities. We follow a minimal chemical/vaccination and holistic approach when possible.
Do I need to train my dog?
Yes, commitment is required.
A happy Aussie is a fulfilled Aussie.
A happy owner enjoys working with their dog, building a relationship, and meeting the innate needs of an Aussie.
After all, this is a herding breed.
Should I be outdoorsy and active for a SLAS dog?
Simply put, yes!
Aussies from Silver Linings are bred to the standard outlined for the breed. This means they have higher drive and energy, naturally possessing characteristic breed traits. Our dogs are best suited for people living active lifestyles as a verb who seek to include a Shepherd in their adventures on the regular. Our homes are hikers, campers, rock climbers, walkers, joggers, marathon runners, kayakers, boaters, surfers, and farmers who spend time outdoors adventuring with their dogs.
What is life with a SLAS dog like?
Many successful SLAS homes with thriving dogs spend considerable time together throughout the week. When they aren’t exercising, they are at a training class, competition, or simply spending quality time enjoying life relaxing at home with their best companion keeping a watchful line of sight.
Our dogs often travel with their homes for vacations, family trips, or backpacking adventures. They are incorporated into everyday life, outings, and activities.
What qualities do you look for in a SLAS home?
Our dogs require calmness, patience, and confidence. They are intended for homes who have the capacity to meet their social, mental, physical, and financial needs.
Couples who own a home with fencing or acreage is preferable but that is far from required. We have successfully placed SLAS dogs in single person apartments who have done a fabulous job.
What support do you offer?
We stand behind every dog we produce and maintain lifelong contact.
SLAS dogs are placed on co-own contracts establishing our dedication to your success.
